Maarten's battle with the Big 'C' began just a few weeks ago, when he investigated the pain in his hip and back. A lump was found in his spine which has since been identified as Ewing's Sarcoma; a very rare form of cancer solely found in children, teenagers, and young adults. It is the cause of just 1% of cancers in young adults, making Maarten the newest member of the very selective club in Australia.
He has just begun his first few days of chemotherapy; a nasty process which he will endure over the next 51 weeks. This will be followed by surgery to remove the sarcoma. Unfortunately, this is resulting in Maarten not being able to spend Christmas with his family or travel anywhere far outside Brisbane.
We are raising money to help support Maarten through transportation funding to and from the hospital and other appointments as he is unable to drive during chemo, put food on the table, and pay his bills.
Maarten is only 22 years of age and needs all the support he can get. He is an apprentice electrician with a house amid a renovation and a mortgage. While he has faced so many battles before this, this is by far the hardest as he is unable to work indefinitely. He does not know how long this will last, and while we are all hoping that he can return to life as he knew it following the completion of chemotherapy and surgery, we all know that the burden of cancer has a mind of its own.
Anyone who knows Maarten will know that he is too proud to ask for help, so this is where we can provide some assistance. Please donate and feel free to add your message as we unite to help Maarten fight his battle.
